Ukraine, the world's leading seed oils exporter

Ukraine is the world's biggest exporter of sunflower seeds and oils. Ukraine’s sunflower seeds and oil exports are being slightly affected by the ongoing war with Russia. As compared to FY 2022, there was a decline of 6% in the exports during fiscal year 2023. According to Ukraine import export data reports, the country's sunflower seeds and oil exports were recorded to be 5 billion dollars this year while it was 5.5 billion dollars in 2022.

Sunflower seeds and oils were the most exported items from Ukraine during last year. Ukraine's majority of the seed oil exports went to Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey and Hungary. Ukraine's exports share wise, Bulgaria (32%), Romania (20%), Turkey (15%) and Hungary (13.5%) were the top seed oil exporters in the world. Also, some of the fastest growing markets for Ukraine's seed oils exports were Moldova, France, Poland, Spain, Croatia and Poland. 


Ukraine export data shows that Lotivika Elite, Antagro, and Dayana Limited were the leading sunflower seeds and oils exporting companies from Ukraine with maximum number of shipments last year. Whereas Mogyi Kft from Hungary, Alwera from Austria and Brevis from Bulgaria were the leading seed oil import companies from Ukraine.


On the other hand, Ukraine's sunflower seeds and oil imports were recorded to be $6.4 billion during last year. As per Ukraine import data reports, India and European Union were the top suppliers of seed oils to Ukraine with over 31% and 26% share respectively. There were some notable amounts of seed oil imports from China, Russia, Australia, Kazakhstan and France. 


Bimarket Trading, Syngenta and ATB market were the leading sunflower seed oils import companies from Ukraine with maximum number of shipments during last year. Whereas, Sotiva Seed from European Union, Red River from Australia and Unjha Agro Company from India were among the top sunflower seeds suppliers to Ukraine last year.


Apart from sunflower seeds and oils, rapeseeds were the third biggest export item from Ukraine in 2023. According to Ukraine customs data reports, the country's rapeseed exports stood around $1.2 billion during FY 2023. Poland and Romania were the leading rapeseed importing countries from Ukraine with 24% and 21% share repectively. Ukraine's most favoured destinations for rapeseed exports were Germany (13%), Belgium (8%), France (5%), United Kingdom (4.2%) and United Kingdom (4%).


Eridon Ukraine, Suffle Agro Ukraine and Promvagontrans Ukraine were among Ukraine’s major rapeseeds exporting companies. Sir, there was a 3% increase in the exports of rapeseeds from Ukraine.
