Portugal exports depend largely on its agricultural activity. According to Portugal import export data, over 4.8 billion euros worth of agricultural items were exported from Portugal during fiscal year 2023. These include prepared food items, tobacco, beverages, fruits and vegetables. Animals and Vegetable products were the most profitable agricultural exports of Portugal during last year.

As per Portugal export data, the country's vegetable exports were estimated to be 2.2 billion Euros. Whereas, Animal products exports were recorded to be 2.3 billion in fiscal year 2023. Portugal is the world’s 52nd biggest vegetable exporter in the world. Portugal’s major vegetable exports include olives, mushrooms, cucumbers, dried legumes, broccoli, potatoes.


Spain was the biggest market for Portugal's vegetable exports with 44% market share. France was the second biggest market with 10% share of Portugal's vegetable exports. Among the emerging markets for Portugal's vegetable exports were the Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom, Belgium, Italy and Poland.


In terms of fruit exports, Portugal has made over $1.3 Billion during last year. Portugal was the 33rd biggest exporter of fresh fruits in 2023. These include avocados, guavas, pineapples, dates, figs, mangoes, and oranges. The major markets for Portugal’s fruits exports were Spain (45%), France (15%), Germany (9.5%), Netherlands (9%) and the United Kingdom (4.2%).


Fresh flowers were other significant agricultural exports of Portugal with around $45 million worth during fiscal year 2023. Almost over 63% of Portugal's flower exports went to the Netherlands followed by Spain (20%), Norway (3.8%), Switzerland (2.6%) and the United Kingdom (1.9%). Also, the Netherlands was the biggest supplier of fresh flowers to Portugal constituting over 55% market share.


According to Portugal customs data, the overall live animals and animal products exports from Portugal were recorded to be 2.2 million euros in 2023. European countries were the major markets for Portugal's agricultural exports with an estimated value of 1.6 million euros in 2023. Also, there was a notable amount of shipments of food preparations, beverages, tobacco products. 


The record 4.8 billion euros worth of these products were made from Portugal in 2023. European Union countries were the biggest importer of tobacco products with 3.3 billion euros worth. Superior Foods International, Marvanejo, Lusopera, and Krefeld Fresh Fruit were the top agricultural goods exporting companies from Portugal. 


Among imports, meat and edible offal were the most imported agricultural products in Portugal. According to Portugal import data, over 1.3 million euros worth of meat products were imported into portugal. Cereals were the second major agricultural import made by Portugal with an estimated worth of 1.2 million euros during 2023.


Portugal is expected to get a good yield this year and agricultural exports forecasts seem positive this year. Portugal import export companies which are associated with the agribusiness sector could further extend their revenue through the assistance of global import export data providers
